Where Wolves Learn To Bleed
Lyra Pov—
People often said fate arrived like moonlight—soft, silver, beautiful.
They lied.
Fate arrived like a blade pressed against the throat.
Quiet. Cold. Unforgiving.
And mine?
Mine walked through the halls of Blackthorn Dominion Academy with storm-colored eyes and a crown already dripping from his future.
His name was Kael Draven Ashbourne.
Future Alpha of the Nightbane Crescent Pack.
The boy every girl desired.
The wolf every man feared.
And the only person who had never once looked at me like I existed.
---
“Stop staring before you melt into the floor.”
My best friend, Candice Vale, snapped her fingers in front of my face before dropping dramatically into the chair across from me.
I blinked, tearing my gaze away from Kael.
He sat at the far end of the academy cafeteria, surrounded by his Beta circle like darkness gathered around its king. Laughter echoed from his table, but he barely smiled. Kael rarely did.
Even from across the room, his presence swallowed the air.
Black shirt rolled to his elbows. Veins tracing down powerful forearms. Silver rings flashing beneath the cafeteria lights. A dangerous face sculpted by cruel gods who clearly had favorites.
And me?
I was merely Lyra Whitmore—daughter of the Beta commander.
Not weak enough to be ignored.
Not powerful enough to matter.
“Lyra.” Candice leaned forward. “You stare at him like he personally hung the moon.”
I scoffed softly. “I was just looking around.”
“Oh yes, of course.” She pressed a hand dramatically to her chest. “And your eyes accidentally landed on the future Alpha again. Tragic coincidence.”
A reluctant smile tugged at my lips.
Candice knew everything about me.
The stolen glances.
The ridiculous hope.
The way my heartbeat betrayed me every time Kael entered a room.
“You know,” she continued, lowering her voice, “your father is practically his family. If Kael wanted you, nobody would object.”
I looked down at my untouched drink.
“That’s exactly the problem.”
“What is?”
“I don’t want him to notice me because of my father.” My fingers tightened around the cup. “I want him to look at me… like I’m just Lyra.”
Candice stared at me for a moment before sighing dramatically.
“You’re beautiful, smart, loyal, and dangerously easy to love. If he doesn’t fall for you, I’ll personally throw him off a cliff.”
“Selene!”
She laughed while I buried my burning face in my hands.
The academy bell echoed through the cafeteria, sharp and metallic.
Students began pouring toward the hallways.
Blackthorn Dominion Academy was the most prestigious supernatural university in the Northern Territories—a place where future Alphas, warriors, strategists, and heirs were molded into monsters wearing crowns.
And somewhere inside those halls walked the boy who had ruined my peace years ago.
Not because of his face.
Not because every girl wanted him.
But because when I was fourteen and nearly killed during a rogue attack beyond pack borders—
Kael had carried me home covered in blood.
Mine.
Not his.
Some memories become scars.
Others become obsessions.
Mine became him.
---
Candice and I stood outside our next lecture hall when the corridor suddenly fell quieter.
The shift was immediate.
Like prey sensing a predator.
Kael appeared at the end of the hallway with two of his friends beside him.
Tall. Untouchable. Lethal.
Girls straightened as he passed. Boys lowered their gazes instinctively.
Power clung to him like smoke.
My pulse stumbled.
Pathetic.
Absolutely pathetic.
I tried pretending I wasn’t watching him approach, but my wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin.
Then suddenly—
Someone shoved past me from the side.
I lost balance with a gasp.
And collided directly into Kael Ashbourne.
A sharp breath escaped my lips as his arm wrapped around my waist before I could fall.
Strong.
Warm.
Dangerous.
The world stopped spinning for one humiliating second.
His scent crashed into me first—cedarwood, rain, and something darker beneath it. Something wild.
My fingers instinctively gripped his shirt.
Big mistake.
Very big mistake.
Because Kael looked down at me.
Actually looked at me.
His eyes were not soft eyes.
They were the kind poets warned women about.
Storm-gray. Heavy. Ruined.
“You okay?”
His voice was deep enough to make my thoughts forget language.
I realized too late I had been staring.
Again.
Mortified, I stepped back immediately.
“Y-Yes. Sorry.”
His hand slipped away from my waist slowly.
Too slowly.
For one impossible second, his gaze lingered on my face.
Then it vanished.
Like it had never been there at all.
Kael gave a single nod and walked into the classroom.
And just like that—
the universe resumed breathing.
Behind me, Candice grabbed my arm so hard I nearly yelped.
“Oh my God,” she whispered violently. “YOU TOUCHED HIM.”
“Please stop talking.”
“You breathed the same oxygen!”
“I hate you.”
“You’re welcome.”
---
The lecture hall buzzed with chatter as students filled the seats.
Unfortunately for me, the only empty seats were nowhere near Kael.
Cruel fate remained consistent.
Professor Virell entered moments later carrying stacks of papers.
“Today,” he announced proudly, “we’ll discuss influence branding and strategic sponsorship alliances.”
A collective groan spread through the room.
He ignored it.
“In every kingdom, every corporation, every supernatural territory—power requires a face people trust.” He paused dramatically before gesturing toward the back row. “Someone like Kael Ashbourne.”
Instant silence.
Naturally.
Everyone turned toward him.
Kael leaned lazily in his chair, expression unreadable.
“It is an honor,” Professor Virell continued, nearly sweating from admiration, “to teach the future Alpha of Nightbane Crescent.”
Kael slowly lifted his gaze.
“Kael.”
The professor blinked. “Excuse me?”
“Call me Kael.”
The room erupted into muffled laughter.
Beside me, Selene muttered, “The amount of bootlicking in this academy should honestly be illegal.”
I nearly choked trying not to laugh.
But while everyone focused on the professor’s embarrassment—
I noticed something else.
Kael wasn’t paying attention.
His fingers tapped slowly against the desk.
His jaw remained tight.
And his eyes?
Far away.
Like part of him lived somewhere darker than this room.
---
Kael Ashbourne carried ghosts.
Everyone knew it.
He wasn’t born heir to Nightbane Crescent.
He inherited the title through tragedy.
His parents—former Alpha Cassian Ashbourne and Luna Seraphine—were slaughtered during a border massacre when Kael was only six.
After that, Alpha Darius Ashbourne raised him as his own son.
But blood remembers blood.
And kingdoms remember weakness.
Which was why whispers still existed.
Because Darius Ashbourne had a biological son.
Ronan Ashbourne.
The forgotten prince.
The exile.
The boy sent away nearly eight years ago after something happened inside the pack.
Nobody spoke about it openly anymore.
But shadows have sharp memories.
And tonight—
Ronan was returning home.
---
“Are you coming tonight?”
Candice's voice pulled me from my thoughts.
“To the welcome party?”
I grimaced. “Do I have a choice?”
“No.”
“Then why ask?”
She grinned triumphantly.
“Because Kael will be there.”
Of course he would.
Future Alphas never missed political appearances.
Especially not when the lost heir returned.
A girl seated ahead of us suddenly turned around.
“I heard Ronan’s transferring here.”
Candice's eyes widened instantly. “Seriously?”
The girl nodded eagerly. “My cousin works in the administrative wing. Apparently Alpha Darius personally arranged everything.”
I frowned.
Ronan Ashbourne.
Even as children, he had unsettled me.
Kael was cold.
Ronan was chaos.
There was a difference.
One froze you slowly.
The other burned everything down.
---
By evening, the city was drowning beneath neon lights and thundercloud skies.
Candice dragged me into Velvet Howl, the most infamous club in the territory.
Music vibrated through the walls like a second heartbeat.
Smoke curled beneath crimson lights.
Bodies moved recklessly beneath chandeliers dripping black crystal.
This world felt nothing like the quiet life I preferred.
It felt dangerous.
Seductive.
Like temptation wearing expensive cologne.
“I’m getting drinks,” Candice yelled over the music before disappearing into the crowd.
And then—
I saw him.
Kael stood near the VIP balcony, speaking to a breathtaking blonde wrapped around his arm.
Juliette Laurent.
His ex-girlfriend.
My stomach twisted painfully.
Still, I forced myself forward.
Because maybe tonight he would finally look at me differently.
Maybe tonight fate would be kind.
Stupid girl.
“Kael.”
He turned.
For a second, recognition flickered in his eyes.
“Yeah?”
My courage abandoned me instantly.
“H-Hi.”
Brilliant, Lyra. Absolutely poetic.
Kael gave a short nod before turning back toward Juliette.
Like I was nothing more than another passing face.
I took a small step backward.
Then I heard her voice.
“You know her?”
Kael answered casually.
“Hm.”
Juliette smirked. “She looks like the type who’d follow you around forever.”
A pause.
Then—
“She’s not my type.”
Three simple words.
And somehow they cut deeper than claws ever could.
The music blurred.
My chest tightened violently.
It felt ridiculous how much those words hurt.
But heartbreak does not care about dignity.
It devours anyway.
I turned quickly, blinking hard against humiliating tears.
The crowd became hazy around me.
Lights smeared into colors.
Voices became noise.
Then suddenly—
I slammed into someone.
A hard chest.
Strong hands caught my arms instantly.
I inhaled sharply and looked up.
Everything inside me went still.
Black hair.
Dark eyes.
Cruel mouth.
Beautiful in the way thunderstorms were beautiful.
His gaze swept slowly over me before returning to my face.
Cold.
Interested.
Dangerous.
Then his lips curved slightly.
Not a smile.
Something far worse.
“Now who,” he said softly, voice like velvet dragged across a knife, “are you?” I don't know what happened to me but I ran from there.
And for the first time in years—
I realized the wrong Ashbourne brother had noticed me.
