The Man Who Arrived Too Late

The Man Who Arrived Too Late

"Some delays are measured in minutes. Others are measured in lifetimes."

---

The morning arrived draped in an unsettling silence.

The Khanna Mansion, usually resonating with warmth and effortless laughter, had transformed into a place where every smile seemed rehearsed and every conversation carefully measured.

Servants moved briskly through the corridors.

Fresh white lilies adorned the entrance.

The aroma of sandalwood incense drifted through the air.

Everything looked auspicious.

Everything looked prepared...

Except Anaya.

She stood before the mirror, dressed in a soft ivory suit.

Her mother had insisted.

"It's only a formal ceremony."

"Nothing more."

But Anaya knew better.

Some ceremonies don't merely exchange rings.

They quietly bury dreams.

---

Her reflection stared back at her.

Dark circles beneath her eyes.

Lips that had forgotten how to smile.

A heart that refused to surrender.

She slowly opened the drawer beside her dressing table.

Inside lay dozens of tiny memories.

A movie ticket from their first date.

A dried lavender flower Ayaan had once tucked into her diary.

A handwritten birthday letter beginning with—

"To the girl who unknowingly became my favourite prayer..."

A small silver keychain shaped like a moon.

She smiled through tears.

"Tum sach mein pagal ho, Ayaan..."

(You really are crazy, Ayaan...)

"You preserved every tiny moment."

A tear landed upon the letter.

She quickly folded everything back into the drawer.

Because some memories become impossible to look at when you're about to lose the person who created them.

---

Across the city...

Ayaan Malhotra stood before another mirror.

His navy-blue suit fit perfectly.

The new blazer he'd bought with his own salary advance rested proudly upon his shoulders.

His mother walked in carrying a small silver tray.

A tiny bowl of curd and sugar.

She smiled.

"For good luck."

He laughed.

"Maa..."

"You still believe in this?"

"A mother doesn't take chances where her son's happiness is concerned."

He bent slightly.

She fed him a spoonful.

Then placed her trembling hand upon his head.

"May God never let your intentions become smaller than your dreams."

His father entered moments later.

He wasn't a man of elaborate emotions.

He simply adjusted Ayaan's collar.

"You'll make us proud."

Ayaan smiled.

"I hope today Uncle Rajeev says yes."

His father looked at him for a long moment.

"I don't know what his answer will be."

"But remember..."

"A refusal never defines a man's worth."

"The way he accepts it does."

---

Ayaan picked up the neatly wrapped box containing the engagement ring.

Inside it rested a delicate platinum band.

Simple.

Elegant.

Exactly the way Anaya liked everything.

He whispered softly—

"Bas thodi der aur..."

(Just a little longer...)

---

At eleven in the morning...

The gates of the Khanna Mansion opened once again.

A convoy of luxurious black cars entered the driveway.

The Mathur family had arrived.

Armaan stepped out first.

He wore an impeccably tailored black bandhgala.

Every movement reflected composure.

Every word reflected refinement.

As Rajeev approached him—

Armaan immediately bent to touch his feet.

Rajeev gently stopped him.

"No, son."

Armaan smiled.

"Respect never diminishes a man, Uncle."

Rajeev looked genuinely impressed.

Nandini exchanged a glance with her husband.

"He is so well-mannered."

The servants admired him.

The relatives praised him.

Even the elderly family priest smiled approvingly.

To everyone present...

Armaan Mathur appeared to be the embodiment of grace.

No one noticed...

that every time someone praised him...

his smile lingered a fraction longer than necessary.

Just enough to be overlooked.

---

Upstairs...

Anaya heard the arrival.

Her breathing became uneven.

She wasn't afraid of Armaan.

She barely knew him.

She was afraid of what today represented.

A knock echoed against her bedroom door.

It was her cousin.

"Di..."

"They're asking for you."

She didn't move.

Not immediately.

After a few moments...

she stood.

Each step toward the staircase felt impossibly heavy.

---

At that exact moment...

A yellow cab stopped outside the mansion.

Ayaan stepped out.

One hand carried white lilies.

The other held a box of sweets.

His appointment letter rested safely inside a leather folder.

He looked at the enormous gates.

Smiled.

Then whispered—

"Bismillah."

(In the name of God.)

Today...

he wasn't merely visiting.

He was asking for the woman he had loved for almost half his life.

---

The security guard approached politely.

"Sir?"

"My name is Ayaan Malhotra."

"I have an appointment with Mr. Rajeev Khanna."

The guard checked inside through the intercom.

Moments later...

the butler himself came outside.

He recognised the name immediately.

"Please come in."

Ayaan's heartbeat quickened.

This was it.

---

Inside...

Anaya descended the grand staircase.

Every conversation gradually faded.

Every eye turned toward her.

She looked breathtaking.

Yet heartbreak possesses a peculiar beauty.

It makes even the brightest eyes appear impossibly distant.

Armaan looked up.

For a brief moment...

he simply admired her respectfully.

Then he smiled.

"You look beautiful."

She managed a polite nod.

"Thank you."

Nothing more.

---

Rajeev looked toward the entrance.

The butler approached.

"Sir..."

"Mr. Ayaan Malhotra has arrived."

The drawing room fell silent.

Anaya's heart stopped.

Her fingers instinctively tightened around the edge of her dupatta.

Rajeev remained expressionless.

"Bring him in."

The enormous wooden doors slowly opened.

Ayaan walked inside.

The bouquet in his hands.

Hope in his eyes.

A respectful smile upon his face.

His gaze searched the room.

It found Anaya first.

For one breathtaking second...

the entire world disappeared.

Then...

his eyes moved lower.

To her left hand.

A diamond ring shimmered beneath the chandelier.

His footsteps faltered.

The bouquet slipped slightly in his grasp.

His smile...

vanished.

Not dramatically.

Not all at once.

It simply...

ceased to exist.

Anaya instinctively took a step toward him.

"Ayaan..."

His eyes met hers.

There were no accusations in them.

No anger.

Only bewilderment.

As though the universe had suddenly begun speaking a language he no longer understood.

He looked at Rajeev.

Then at the gathered families.

Then at Armaan.

Who calmly walked forward.

Extended his hand.

And said with impeccable courtesy—

"Hello."

"I'm Armaan Mathur."

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Mr. Malhotra."

Ayaan looked at the outstretched hand for several long seconds.

Then...

slowly...

he shook it.

Neither man smiled.

Neither man looked away.

The room had become unbearably still.

No one realised...

that this handshake would become the beginning of a story none of them were prepared to survive.

End of Chapter Five

"The cruelest heartbreak is not watching the person you love choose someone else. It is discovering they never had the chance to choose at all."

Dear future readers, I'm a new writer on Wattpad, and maybe today my stories are strangers to you. But I have a promise. I'm not here to write characters you'll forget after the last chapter. I'm here to create the kind of people who will stay in your mind long after you close the book. You'll celebrate with them. You'll get angry because of them. You'll cry for them. You'll miss them when the story ends. Some chapters will make you smile. Some will leave you staring at the ceiling at 3 a.m., wondering why fictional characters can feel so real. If you decide to give my stories a chance, don't expect perfect people. Expect unforgettable ones. One day, I hope you'll recommend my novels not because I asked you to… …but because you couldn't stop thinking about the characters. Welcome to the beginning of an obsession. I hope you're ready. 🖤
