The Man Who Didn't Look Back

Not every goodbye is spoken. Some are measured by the courage it takes... to keep walking without turning around even once

"Not every goodbye is spoken. Some are measured by the courage it takes... to keep walking without turning around even once."

---

The final wedding mantra dissolved into applause.

Rose petals drifted lazily through the air.

The sacred fire continued burning at the centre of the mandap, its flames dancing as though oblivious to the devastation they had just witnessed.

The priest smiled warmly.

"From this moment onwards..."

"...you are husband and wife."

The guests erupted into celebration.

Someone burst a line of flower cannons.

Children laughed.

The dhol echoed once more.

To everyone gathered beneath the decorated canopy...

it was the beginning of a beautiful marriage.

To Ayaan Malhotra...

it was the official burial of a future he had spent nine years building.

---

He walked slowly across the marble courtyard.

Each footstep felt strangely weightless.

Almost mechanical.

As though his body had continued moving while his soul remained standing beside the sacred fire.

Behind him...

voices called one another.

Relatives posed for photographs.

The wedding photographer instructed—

"Smile, please!"

Someone asked the bride to look toward the groom.

Someone adjusted the veil.

Life moved on.

It always did.

No matter whose heart had stopped beating inside.

---

His black kurta had become damp with perspiration beneath the afternoon heat.

The skin across both palms had split where the wooden dhol sticks had rubbed against them.

Tiny streaks of blood stained his fingers.

He noticed.

He simply didn't care.

Pain has an unusual habit.

Once it crosses a certain threshold...

the body quietly surrenders to it.

---

At the entrance of the mansion...

he paused.

The enormous wrought-iron gates stood open.

Beyond them waited his car.

Freedom.

Distance.

Silence.

He placed one hand against the cold iron.

Closed his eyes.

For one fragile second...

his mind betrayed him.

It imagined a different ending.

Anaya running after him.

Calling his name.

Telling everyone the truth.

The wedding stopping.

Her hand finding his once again.

The vision disappeared almost instantly.

Reality returned.

Brutally.

He smiled at himself.

"Aakhir insaan hoon..."

(After all... I'm only human.)

"Khwaab dekhna abhi tak nahi chhoda."

(I still haven't stopped dreaming.)

He opened the gate.

Walked out.

Never once looking back.

---

Inside the mansion...

Anaya sat beside Armaan during the post-wedding rituals.

People surrounded them from every direction.

Aunts blessed them.

Uncles cracked jokes.

Photographers captured hundreds of smiling photographs.

Someone adjusted the bride's dupatta.

Someone else offered sweets.

She heard none of it.

Her eyes searched the entrance.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The gates stood empty.

Ayaan had gone.

This time...

without waiting for her.

Without hoping.

Without believing.

Something inside her whispered—

"He won't come back."

---

The thought terrified her.

Not because he had left.

Because she knew him.

Ayaan wasn't the sort of man who left halfway.

If he walked away completely...

it meant he had convinced himself there was nothing left worth returning to.

---

"Anaya?"

Armaan's voice gently interrupted her thoughts.

She turned.

"Hmm?"

"The photographer is asking for one picture."

She nodded absent-mindedly.

The camera flashed.

Another.

And another.

Every photograph captured the same expression.

A bride looking everywhere...

except at the groom.

---

Across the city...

Ayaan drove without choosing a destination.

The roads gradually emptied as evening approached.

Traffic lights changed from red to green.

Vehicles overtook him.

He barely noticed.

His phone vibrated repeatedly.

His mother.

His father.

Three friends.

Twenty-three unread messages.

He ignored every one of them.

Finally...

he stopped beside the lake where he and Anaya had spent countless evenings.

The place looked exactly the same.

The old wooden bench still faced the water.

The tea vendor still stood beneath the peepal tree.

Even the ducks floated peacefully across the lake.

Only one thing had changed.

The two people who had promised to grow old together...

were no longer sitting there.

---

He slowly walked toward the bench.

Sat down.

Looked across the water.

The breeze carried the scent of rain.

He smiled faintly.

"You know..."

he whispered into the silence,

"I really believed we'd bring our children here one day."

His voice echoed back to him.

Only silence answered.

---

He reached into his blazer pocket.

The small velvet ring box remained exactly where he had placed it.

Untouched.

He opened it carefully.

The platinum ring gleamed beneath the fading sunlight.

For several moments...

he simply stared at it.

Then...

he remembered the afternoon he had bought it.

The jeweller had smiled and said—

"She's a lucky girl."

Ayaan had laughed.

"No."

"I'm the lucky one."

His fingers tightened around the box.

He closed it again.

Not because the memory hurt.

Because it hurt too much.

---

At the Khanna Mansion...

the time for vidaai had arrived.

The atmosphere changed completely.

Laughter gave way to tears.

Nandini embraced her daughter tightly.

Relatives wept openly.

Rajeev stood several feet away.

Trying desperately to remain composed.

Anaya touched her parents' feet.

When she reached Rajeev...

he gently placed his hand upon her head.

"Be happy."

The blessing felt unbearably heavy.

She looked into his eyes.

For the first time in days...

she asked no questions.

She made no requests.

She simply whispered—

"I hope one day..."

"...you forgive yourself."

Rajeev froze.

Before he could answer...

she had already stepped away.

---

As the bridal car began moving...

Anaya instinctively looked through the rear window.

The mansion slowly disappeared.

The streets changed.

The city blurred.

Then...

she saw it.

The lake.

The very same lake where she and Ayaan had once promised never to let go of each other's hands.

A solitary figure sat on the old wooden bench.

Dressed in black.

Head lowered.

She couldn't see his face.

She didn't need to.

She knew.

Her heart screamed his name.

Her lips never did.

The car continued forward.

The lake vanished behind a bend.

And with it...

the last glimpse of the man who had loved her more gently than anyone else ever had.

---

Night descended.

Ayaan finally stood.

He looked at the ring box one last time.

Then slipped it back into his pocket.

"No."

he whispered.

"I won't throw it away."

"Some memories aren't meant to be erased."

"They're meant to remind us..."

"...that we were once capable of loving without conditions."

He looked toward the dark sky.

His eyes no longer held tears.

Only stillness.

The kind of stillness that comes after a storm has destroyed everything in its path.

Sometimes...

peace isn't healing.

Sometimes...

it's simply the moment a heart stops expecting miracles.

---

End of Chapter Eleven

"A broken heart does not always seek revenge.

Sometimes it chooses something far more painful...

It learns to live as though the person it once loved has become a beautiful memory instead of a possible future."

Dear future readers, I'm a new writer on Wattpad, and maybe today my stories are strangers to you. But I have a promise. I'm not here to write characters you'll forget after the last chapter. I'm here to create the kind of people who will stay in your mind long after you close the book. You'll celebrate with them. You'll get angry because of them. You'll cry for them. You'll miss them when the story ends. Some chapters will make you smile. Some will leave you staring at the ceiling at 3 a.m., wondering why fictional characters can feel so real. If you decide to give my stories a chance, don't expect perfect people. Expect unforgettable ones. One day, I hope you'll recommend my novels not because I asked you to… …but because you couldn't stop thinking about the characters. Welcome to the beginning of an obsession. I hope you're ready. 🖤
