"Sometimes distance does not begin with miles. It begins the moment the only person who understood your silence becomes someone you can no longer call."
---
The private terminal remained unusually quiet.
Unlike the chaos of commercial airports, everything here moved with calculated elegance.
Luxury cars stopped one after another beneath the illuminated entrance.
Security personnel greeted Armaan by name.
Assistants hurried forward to collect the luggage.
The staff bowed respectfully.
"Good evening, Mr. Mathur."
"Your aircraft is ready."
Anaya stood quietly beside him, still dressed in the pale peach saree she had changed into after leaving the wedding. The bridal jewellery had been replaced with something simpler, yet the vermilion resting in the parting of her hair refused to let her forget that only a few hours earlier...
her entire life had changed.
She looked toward the runway.
A sleek white private jet waited beneath rows of blue taxiway lights.
Its engines hummed softly.
Everything happened so quickly that reality struggled to keep pace.
This morning...
she had awakened in her father's house.
Tonight...
she was leaving her country.
---
Armaan noticed the uncertainty in her expression.
He slowed his pace.
"Long flights can be exhausting."
She nodded faintly.
"I know."
"If you feel uncomfortable..."
he smiled gently,
"...just tell me."
She looked at him.
He continued,
"You don't have to pretend you're alright."
For a brief moment...
she almost forgot how to answer kindness.
"I'll be okay."
He didn't argue.
Sometimes people needed space more than reassurance.
---
Inside the aircraft...
everything reflected understated luxury.
Cream leather seats.
Walnut interiors.
Soft ambient lighting.
Fresh lilies arranged in crystal vases.
A faint fragrance of sandalwood lingered through the cabin.
The flight attendant greeted them warmly.
"Welcome aboard."
Armaan turned toward Anaya.
"Would you like something before takeoff?"
She shook her head.
"No... thank you."
He smiled politely.
"As you wish."
Not once...
did he insist.
---
The aircraft began moving.
Slowly...
it taxied across the runway.
Outside...
the city lights stretched endlessly beneath the night sky.
Anaya rested her forehead lightly against the window.
India gradually disappeared beneath layers of cloud.
She watched until there was nothing left to see.
Not the city.
Not the roads.
Not even the lights.
Only darkness.
A single tear rolled silently down her cheek.
She quickly wiped it away before anyone noticed.
---
The exhaustion of the previous week finally caught up with her.
Seven sleepless nights.
Endless ceremonies.
Constant tears.
The unbearable weight of pretending.
Her eyelids gradually became heavier.
She fought sleep.
Lost.
Within minutes...
she had drifted into a deep, dreamless slumber.
---
Armaan looked toward her.
Her head had tilted slightly toward the window.
Loose strands of hair had fallen across her face.
The cabin temperature had become cooler as they reached cruising altitude.
Quietly...
he pressed the call button.
The flight attendant approached.
"In case she wakes..."
he whispered,
"could you keep an extra blanket nearby?"
"Of course, sir."
He thanked her softly.
Then returned to reading the documents resting on his lap.
Outside...
the aircraft continued crossing continents.
Inside...
one passenger travelled toward a business meeting.
The other...
toward a life she had never chosen.
---
Several hours later...
the pilot's announcement gently echoed through the cabin.
"We'll be landing in London shortly."
Anaya slowly opened her eyes.
For a brief second...
she looked confused.
Then memory returned.
The wedding.
The flight.
The marriage.
Everything.
She quietly looked outside.
The first light of dawn spread across the London skyline.
The city appeared breathtaking.
Ancient architecture blended seamlessly with towering glass buildings.
The River Thames shimmered beneath the morning sun.
She had always dreamt of visiting London.
Never...
like this.
---
The aircraft landed smoothly.
Luxury vehicles already waited beside the private terminal.
The moment they stepped outside...
a cool breeze greeted them.
It carried a chill entirely different from home.
Armaan noticed her shiver.
"Cold?"
"A little."
He looked toward one of the staff members.
"Please bring her coat from the luggage."
Within moments...
the coat arrived.
He didn't place it around her shoulders himself.
Instead...
he simply handed it to her.
She accepted it quietly.
"Thank you."
---
The drive through London remained almost silent.
Historic buildings passed outside the window.
Stone churches.
Old bridges.
Tree-lined avenues.
Everything looked unfamiliar.
Everything beautiful.
Everything lonely.
After nearly forty minutes...
the car entered an exclusive gated estate.
Towering iron gates opened automatically.
Beyond them stood an enormous contemporary villa overlooking a private lake.
Floor-to-ceiling glass windows reflected the pale morning sky.
Perfectly maintained gardens surrounded the property.
The architecture was magnificent.
Almost unreal.
Yet...
to Anaya...
it looked impossibly empty.
---
The chauffeur opened her door.
She stepped out slowly.
The silence unsettled her immediately.
No relatives.
No wedding songs.
No servants bustling through corridors.
No familiar voices.
Only wind moving gently through the trees.
The villa itself seemed to breathe in silence.
---
Inside...
everything appeared immaculate.
Minimalist interiors.
Modern artwork.
A grand piano.
An elegant spiral staircase.
A library stretching across two floors.
It was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful homes she had ever seen.
Yet every footstep echoed.
The house felt enormous.
Too enormous.
For someone who had spent her entire life surrounded by people.
---
Armaan glanced at his watch.
A trace of disappointment crossed his face.
"I hate this timing."
She looked toward him.
"I have to leave immediately."
"My board meeting starts in forty-five minutes."
He sighed.
"I couldn't postpone it."
He looked genuinely apologetic.
"I've asked the staff to remain available."
"If you need anything..."
"Anything at all..."
"Just tell Mrs. Eleanor."
"The housekeeper has been with my family for over twenty years."
An elderly English woman smiled warmly.
"Welcome home, Mrs. Mathur."
Anaya returned a polite smile.
---
Armaan looked at her one last time before walking toward the entrance.
"I'll return as early as I can."
He hesitated briefly.
Then asked,
"Will you be alright?"
She forced a small smile.
"I'll try."
He nodded.
"I'll see you this evening."
The front door closed gently behind him.
Moments later...
the sound of the departing car faded into the distance.
Then...
there was nothing.
Only silence.
---
Anaya stood alone in the middle of the vast living room.
She slowly turned.
Every room looked unfamiliar.
Every wall reflected someone else's life.
The silence became louder with every passing second.
She had never realised...
how frightening quietness could be.
Back home...
someone was always nearby.
Her mother calling from the kitchen.
Servants laughing.
Her father talking on the phone.
Even when she locked herself inside her bedroom...
she had never truly been alone.
Here...
the silence seemed endless.
She hugged herself tightly.
Her breathing became uneven.
The villa suddenly felt far too large.
Far too empty.
---
She walked toward one of the enormous windows overlooking the lake.
Outside...
everything looked peaceful.
Inside...
her thoughts refused to stop.
Then...
the memory returned.
Not gently.
Violently.
---
Eight Days Earlier...
Rajeev Khanna's study.
The evening before the engagement.
She stood before her father, tears streaming relentlessly down her face.
"Papa..."
She folded both hands.
"I'll do anything."
"I'll wait."
"I'll study more."
"I'll even leave the city if you want."
"But please..."
"Don't separate me from Ayaan."
Rajeev remained silent.
His face revealed nothing.
She fell to her knees.
"Papa..."
"I love him."
"I can't breathe without him."
"I'll die."
For the first time...
his expression hardened.
He reached for his phone.
Dialed a number.
Placed the call on speaker.
It connected almost immediately.
A calm male voice answered.
"Yes, sir."
Rajeev looked directly into Anaya's tear-filled eyes.
"Status."
The voice replied without hesitation.
"I'm outside Ayaan Malhotra's residence."
"I have visual confirmation."
"His parents are inside."
"My target is secure."
The room spun around her.
Her lips parted.
She couldn't breathe.
The man continued...
"Just one order, sir..."
"...and I'll execute."
Anaya stared at her father in complete horror.
The colour drained from her face.
"No..."
she whispered.
"No..."
Rajeev's gaze never left hers.
He spoke into the phone.
"Stand down."
"For now."
"Remain in position."
"Yes, sir."
The call ended.
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Rajeev slowly placed the phone on the desk.
Then quietly said,
"I have spent my life protecting my daughter."
"I will not let anyone destroy what I believe is her future."
His voice never rose.
"I don't want blood on my hands."
"So don't force me to choose."
Anaya collapsed onto the floor.
Sobbing uncontrollably.
"No..."
"I won't..."
"I won't tell him anything."
"Please..."
"Please don't hurt them."
Rajeev closed his eyes.
"Then let this marriage happen."
---
The memory shattered.
Back in London...
Anaya slid slowly down the wall until she sat on the cold wooden floor.
Her entire body trembled.
She buried her face in both hands.
"Ayaan..."
she whispered through broken sobs.
"I'm sorry..."
"So sorry..."
"You thought..."
"...I chose someone else."
Another sob escaped.
"If only you knew..."
"I was trying to save the people you loved."
She looked toward the grey London sky beyond the window.
Her voice barely existed.
"I don't know if you'll ever forgive me."
She closed her eyes.
"But wherever you are..."
"I hope one day..."
"...you learn the truth."

End of Chapter Thirteen
"Sometimes the greatest sacrifice is not dying for the person you love.
It is allowing them to hate you...
while carrying a truth you can never tell."
