The Smile She Couldn't Explain

"Instinct is the quietest voice inside us... yet it is often the only one that never lies."

---

The London sky had turned a deep shade of indigo.

A steady drizzle painted silver lines across the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Mathur Villa.

The lake outside reflected scattered lights from the neighbouring estates, making the water shimmer like broken glass beneath the moonlight.

Inside...

the silence remained exactly as Anaya had left it.

She hadn't unpacked a singe suitcase.

Her bridal trunk still rested unopened near the staircase.

Her wedding bangles lay untouched upon the bedside table.

Even the room assigned to her looked unfamiliar.

Nothing inside the villa carried her scent.

Nothing carried her memories.

It felt less like home...

and more like an expensive museum where she had accidentally become an exhibit.

---

Mrs. Eleanor knocked gently before entering.

"Mrs. Mathur?"

Anaya looked up from the window.

"Dinner will be ready soon."

She managed a polite smile.

"Thank you."

The elderly woman hesitated.

"Would you like some tea while you wait?"

"No..."

"I'm alright."

Mrs. Eleanor nodded kindly before quietly leaving.

The room fell silent once more.

Anaya hugged herself tightly.

Back home...

she had never realised how comforting ordinary sounds could be.

The clatter of utensils.

Her mother's voice calling the servants.

The television running somewhere in the background.

Even her father's phone conversations.

Here...

silence echoed through every corridor.

---

A little after seven in the evening...

the sound of multiple cars entering the driveway broke the stillness.

Headlights swept across the front windows.

Car doors closed one after another.

Several male voices drifted inside.

Anaya instinctively stood.

She looked toward the entrance hall.

Moments later...

the main door opened.

Armaan stepped inside, loosening the knot of his tie.

He looked exhausted.

The moment he noticed her standing in the hallway...

a genuine smile appeared on his face.

"I'm sorry."

"My meeting took much longer than I expected."

She nodded softly.

"It's okay."

He looked relieved to see her.

"I hope the day wasn't too lonely."

Before she could answer...

four men entered behind him.

All of them appeared to be around Armaan's age.

Well dressed.

Confident.

Successful.

The kind of people who carried themselves as though every room naturally belonged to them.

---

Armaan turned toward them.

"I'd like you all to meet my wife."

His tone carried unmistakable pride.

"This is Anaya."

The men greeted her one by one.

"I'm Ethan."

"Daniel."

"Oliver."

"And I'm Victor."

Each introduced himself politely.

Each smiled.

Each congratulated them on the wedding.

Their words remained perfectly courteous.

Nothing inappropriate was said.

Yet...

the way a couple of them looked at her made something inside her tighten.

It wasn't anything she could explain.

Nothing obvious.

Nothing she could point to.

Just...

a feeling.

The sort of feeling that makes the back of your neck grow cold.

Her smile became smaller.

Her fingers unconsciously clasped together.

---

Armaan continued speaking with his friends, completely unaware of the change in her expression.

Business conversations quickly filled the room.

Investment projects.

Company acquisitions.

Upcoming meetings.

She stood quietly beside them for several moments.

Then slowly walked closer to Armaan.

"Can I... talk to you for a second?"

She spoke softly.

He looked toward her briefly.

"Hmm?"

"I..."

She glanced toward his friends.

"...later."

One of the men laughed at something someone else had said, drawing Armaan's attention back into the conversation.

"We'll talk after dinner."

he assured her.

She nodded.

But the uneasiness remained.

---

Dinner was served in the formal dining hall.

The table easily accommodated twenty people.

Fresh candles burned quietly in the centre.

Crystal glasses reflected the warm light above.

Every dish had been prepared with remarkable precision.

Mrs. Eleanor personally supervised the service.

The atmosphere appeared relaxed.

The four friends joked comfortably with Armaan.

Stories from university.

Business mishaps.

Travels across Europe.

Everyone laughed.

Everyone except Anaya.

She answered politely whenever spoken to.

Beyond that...

she remained mostly silent.

Every now and then...

she felt someone's gaze linger on her just a heartbeat longer than necessary.

Whenever she looked up...

the moment had already passed.

Perhaps...

she was imagining things.

After everything she'd endured over the past week...

perhaps exhaustion had simply made her overly cautious.

She tried convincing herself of that.

Still...

her heartbeat refused to settle.

---

Dinner gradually came to an end.

The staff cleared the main course.

Fresh fruit and desserts replaced it.

Armaan smiled as though suddenly remembering something.

"Oh..."

He looked toward Anaya.

"I forgot."

She looked up.

"Would you mind doing me a favour?"

"Of course."

"In the kitchen..."

He pointed toward the large double-door refrigerator.

"There's a dark chocolate box on the second shelf."

"My favourite one."

"Could you bring it for me?"

She stood immediately.

"I'll get it."

---

The kitchen remained brightly lit.

She opened the refrigerator.

Several beautifully wrapped chocolate boxes rested exactly where he'd described.

She picked up the black one.

Closed the refrigerator.

And returned.

Armaan smiled.

"Found it?"

She nodded.

"Here."

She placed the box before him.

Instead of opening it himself...

he gently pushed it back toward her.

"This isn't actually for me."

She looked confused.

"What?"

"I bought it for you."

"My assistant recommended it."

He smiled warmly.

"They said it's one of the most popular artisan chocolates here."

"I thought..."

"...your first day in London deserved something sweet."

She blinked.

"You bought this..."

"For me."

He nodded.

"I wasn't sure whether you'd like it."

"So..."

He opened the elegant packaging and held out a single chocolate.

"Will you try it?"

---

She hesitated for a brief moment.

Then smiled politely.

"Thank you."

Just as she reached for it...

her eyes accidentally drifted toward the other end of the table.

Victor exchanged a fleeting glance with Daniel.

A smile crossed Victor's face.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

Just...

strange.

It disappeared almost immediately.

So quickly...

that Anaya questioned whether she'd imagined it.

She looked back toward Armaan.

He appeared completely natural.

Waiting patiently.

She told herself she was overthinking.

The past week had made her suspicious of everything.

She accepted the chocolate.

"It's really good."

Armaan encouraged gently.

"You should try it."

She nodded.

Broke off a small piece.

Placed it into her mouth.

The chocolate melted almost instantly.

Rich.

Smooth.

Unlike anything she'd tasted before.

She swallowed.

Everyone resumed talking.

The conversation flowed on.

For several minutes...

nothing happened.

Then...

the room shifted.

At first...

it was subtle.

The candlelight seemed slightly brighter.

The laughter sounded strangely distant.

She blinked once.

Twice.

The crystal chandelier above her appeared to sway.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the chair.

A dull heaviness settled behind her eyes.

She frowned.

"Armaan..."

Her voice sounded unfamiliar.

Almost slurred.

He immediately turned toward her.

"What happened?"

"I..."

The words refused to form.

The room tilted gently.

She pressed one hand against her temple.

"I don't feel..."

Her vision blurred.

Faces became indistinct.

The warm lights stretched into streaks.

She tried standing.

Her knees gave way beneath her.

Darkness flooded the edges of her sight.

The last thing she saw...

was every person at the table suddenly rising from their chairs.

Then...

everything disappeared.

End of Chapter Fourteen

"Sometimes the heart senses danger long before the mind can explain it.

The tragedy is that by the time the truth becomes visible...

the darkness has already begun to fall."

Dear future readers, I'm a new writer on Wattpad, and maybe today my stories are strangers to you. But I have a promise. I'm not here to write characters you'll forget after the last chapter. I'm here to create the kind of people who will stay in your mind long after you close the book. You'll celebrate with them. You'll get angry because of them. You'll cry for them. You'll miss them when the story ends. Some chapters will make you smile. Some will leave you staring at the ceiling at 3 a.m., wondering why fictional characters can feel so real. If you decide to give my stories a chance, don't expect perfect people. Expect unforgettable ones. One day, I hope you'll recommend my novels not because I asked you to… …but because you couldn't stop thinking about the characters. Welcome to the beginning of an obsession. I hope you're ready. 🖤
